Why Cybersecurity as a Career?

With the growing number of tech-focused layoffs starting in 2022, this year is dramatically more challenging for employees looking to stay in tech. Job postings for product & project management receive hundreds of applications while developer-focused roles are increasingly outsourced as hybrid & full-time remote roles continue to gain traction.

What then is a fledgling software enthusiast to do? There are a variety of roles within Cyber Security that will put many of the traditional software skills to use. SIEM’s (Security information & event monitor) need to be managed and continuously improved like any software project. SOC’s (Security Operations Center) are comprised of project managers, security analysts, security developers, and network operators – even quality engineers. These systems groups are responsible for securing an organization, ensuring development practices are compliant and ensuring that user (customer) data is being treated with care.

So how big is this opportunity? Well, current estimates suggest that in Canada alone we are short close to 700,000 security jobs. Add in the United States and that number jumps to over 3 million opportunities. That is a massive skill gap we’re helping to fill.
